Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has commenced the construction of concrete roads in Lagos, Bauchi, Kogi and Kaduna States, beginning with the Itori-Ibese concrete road in Ogun State.

The 24 kilometre Itori-Ibese concrete road, which construction was flagged off at the weekend, in Ogun, would be constructed by AG-Dangote Construction Limited, its joint venture company, with Andrade Gutierrez (AG), the leading construction company in Brazil, and would be the longest stretch of concrete road when completed.

Speaking at the event, the president/chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, said the decision to introduce cement concrete roads in Nigeria, was in line with what obtains in other parts of the world.

He noted that concrete had always made the most sense in the long run as no other paving material approaches concrete’s strength and durability in standing up to heavy usage and truck traffic, saying that one of the major infrastructural challenges is the lack of good quality roads.

“Obviously, this calls for a review of our existing method of building roads in Nigeria. Roads play an important role in the social and economic development of any nation,” he said.

According to Dangote, some state governments were already beginning to take more interest in concrete roads, announcing, “In another CSR initiative, we are reconstructing the Ijora-Apapa Wharf Road in Lagos State, using cement concrete and within the next 18 months, we expect to complete the project and bring succor to Lagosians.

“We have also recently been finally awarded the contract to reconstruct the 42 km Obajana-Kabba Road in Kogi State, in concrete. The estimated cost of the project is N11.5 billion but the federal government has granted us a tax waiver to enable us to recoup part of the estimated cost at N5.6 billion in tax credits and the balance will be our donation as part of our CSR,” he added.

The idea is good but for our kind of weather i don't think concrete road is the best, except they find a way to make it water proof, i will suggest a synergy of some sort, that is doing a concrete base and asphalting at least 3 inch to serve as water proof.
I think this suggestion makes more sense.
I think it's high time somebody talk sense to this man call Dangote for God sake, the fact that he has money does not mean that everything he says is right. Even the Germans, The Italian and Israel people who knows best in the job of road construction have never recommended concrete road anywhere in the world. If he does not know where to push his cement products to, he should stop and divest to Agriculture that is where we need people to pump money to. He always want quick money any time anywhere. No wonder the Angola Government send him packing out of their country. There is nowhere in the world where concrete road is said to be better to Asphalt road. Even his cement people are buying today to built nobody knows whether those building will pass the test of time, say in the next 20 years. I call on well meaning professional not to sleep and allow this man to swindle the nation again in the name of concrete road. I as a person, will not buy into his ploys. Nigeria Government should wake up and stop Dangotes attempt to kill other people's livelihood. There is no sense in concrete road. All the guy is working at is to create another pool of market for his cement product. He started this idea about five years ago, now it's becoming a sellout. Nigeria wake up from your slumber. Dangote should go into Textile, Agriculture, Engineering Fabrication that will earn the country foreign revenue. He should forgot about out local consumption. The Airline business is there, He should refocus to something that will get Nigeria foreign cash inflow. Not colonising us internally. Saheed Bakre
Civil Engineers will know better.
Regarding the use of concrete as a material for road construction. The Germans a few years ago repaved part of the Autobahn with concrete. And the Italians for your information invented concrete roads from Roman times. The Israelis don't matter here.Concrete roads have certain advantages over asphalt. Costs more but last much longer requiring little maintenance.
Concrete roads, asphalt roads, any road. Nigeria needs roads. On the subject of suitability, durability, etc. Any civil engineer knows that any material applied is a question of mix designs to suit local conditions. I have been party to projects on a few continents, where various materials have been used and it all boils down to mix designs and construction methodology. Support the initiative, criticise based on knowledge and information, with alternatives, not sentiments and bias.
Spot on Manny, I'm an economist but that sounds constructive enough
Good idea
