FACTS ABOUT NIGERIANS THAT THE WORLD SHOULD KNOW!

First things first, Africa is not a Country it’s the worlds second largest and second-most-populous continent. For some random reason, whenever people speak about Africa, there’s always a reference to Nigeria. Often referred to as the “Giant of Africa”, Nigeria is home to perhaps one of the largest youth populations in the world hence the many perceptions that have been cultivated over time.

These are 8 facts about Nigerians that the world should know.

1. Nigerians are “very” Educated

graduates

Education is probably one of the most stressed and most important things in Nigeria, so it’s always interesting to hear and read about the random stereotypes that people have. The one thing a lot of people can attest to is that Nigerian parents value education so much they would rather starve themselves than see their children live without a fair chance to go to a learning institution.

As a matter of fact, Nigerian immigrants are the most educated group and have the highest level of education in the United States. The average Nigerian living in the United States has at least two degrees or even more. It’s a force of nature.

2. All Nigerians aren’t Fraudsters

It’s 2015. People need to get over the idea that all Nigerians are fraudulent. I mean, I’ve been in situations where people have made jokes about receiving an email or two from “my people.”

Granted there are scammers that still do their bidding and there have been portions of the country’s youth that have taken to the internet and email inbox’s to make money at the expense of innocent folks and very so often weak-minded people but Nigerians are much more than fraudulent and are involved in way much more than measly “419” scams as we like to call it. I mean come on.. there’s a Simpson’s Episode about Nigerian scammers.

3. Nigerians are very Fashion Forward

Nigerians are quite fashion forward. Fashion choices which have been influenced by years and looks from different continents such as Europe, the U.S. and more etc. Nigerians have found ways to recreate their looks and enhance an often sought after idea of beauty.

From clothes inspired by ethnicity and culture to body marks and tattoos that celebrate pride and nationality.

Of course you will always have that one group of people who are not very fond of style but happen to be in the limelight, it still doesn’t reflect the look of the average fashionable Nigerian.

4. The Average Nigerian is Multilingual

multi lingual

For starters, there are over 50 plus languages and over 200 dialects in Nigeria. So it’s only right that the average Nigerian speaks or/and understands more than two languages.

Also, ENGLISH is an official language in the country. So the bulk of her citizens actually speak and/or understand the English language. TV stations broadcast in English, schools teach and instruct in English and a lot of other obvious things are done with and in the English language. Of course other languages are as important too.

5. Nigerians are well Advanced

Contrary to popular thought, Nigerians are actually quite advanced. Well advanced in thought, potential and a whole lot more. Nigeria is ranked as one of the most developed countries in Africa and possibly one of the up and coming in the world.

Although we still have a long way to go, the future is seemingly bright. Nigerians didn’t grow up in jungles and they don’t live with wild animals.

The popular stereotypes are quite ignorant. Just like every other country, there are rich and wealth driven areas just as much as there are ghettos and slums.

6. Nigerians Make Amazing Music

It’s 2015. If you’ve not listened to Nigerian music, you are probably not as exposed to the world as you think you are. (Humble brag).

International collaborations have been the highlight of Nigerian music in 2015 from well know names such as Akon & D’Banj to Davido & Meek Mill, to Olamide & Wale and to perhaps the most important collaboration of the year, Drake, Skepta and WizKid.

Nigerian music is on the rise and everyone knows these days. Snaps and Instagram clips from celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Swizz Beats and Alicia keys have featured music from top Nigerian artists.

7. Nigerians throw the Best Weddings

wedding

Weddings are a big deal and Nigerians specialize in the art of throwing the best weddings ever. For starters, there are two ceremonies. The Traditional Wedding & the White Wedding as it’s called.

Traditional weddings highlight the beauty in the culture. The bride and groom get to wear their cultural/traditional outfits. Many “non white wedding” rituals are performed in traditional weddings and it’s pretty cool stuff for the most part. Palm Wine, Cola Nuts, and a pretty loud MC. Most of the activities lean towards the culture and the very things that make it up. Of the many things that go on, you get to see the groom and his friends lay prostrate in front of the bride and her family. Pretty cool and colorful stuff.

The White wedding is pretty awesome too. It’s a continuation of the festivities and it’s pretty on point. For more glamorous pictures of Nigerian weddings follow and check out WeLoveNaijaWeddingsBellaNaijaWedding

8. Nigerians are Proud

fasion

This statement has been tried and is absolutely true. Nigerians are proud. We are proud of our heritage, our country and much more. Regardless of the stereotypes and the many thoughts that people have about the country, we stand unfazed.

Great piece of insight into Nigeria.
Sir, everytime I see articles like this, I cringe inside. I recognize that it is done with a good heart to encourage Nigeria to grow, but it is a wrong strategy for nation transformation. 2 Chronicles 7:14- true nation change does not come with boasting, on the contrary is comes with 1- national humility 2- Deep repentance, 3- X ray of our faults, 4- cultural reorientation, 5- building a new culture. Nigeria is a nation like a child in remedial studies. When I was in college, if you cannot make it and are sent to remedial, dad and mum would cut stipends, no new clothes, and all the like. You would be made to see your mistakes and urged to focus and rebuild. It is in Nigeria that I see an attempt to celebrate failure and mediocrity as a means to development. EG president Jonathan said Nigeria is a rich country because people have private jets! This is totally insensitive to the millions of Nigerians who cannot pay school fees for their kids, who are refused medical treatment due to no funds, who are sleeping under bridges and living in shanties, who barely get through life due to hardship How is it that we the successful ones do not see these people anylonger? How do we get to define the success of our nation based on the experiences of a few people on banana island instead on the experience of the masses? yet great nations world over describe their experiences based on the feelings of the masses. Nigeria always makes the mistake of thinking that dishing out "good stories"will develop and promote us. No sir. It fails. The world is not foolish. nice countries are evident. Remember Dora Akinyuli's "great nation good people"branding. Nigeria got worse after that. The problem with the good news trend is that it advances propaganda which borders on untruth. Here are examples: 1- Giant of Africa- true we are called that. This name was given us by the british running up to amalgamation in 1914. It was descriptive of the size of the new nation coming to birth. However, In all folklore, history, biblical stories, Giants always fall. They are a symbol of bully. We are giant because of size. thats how bullies think. I must lead you because I am bigger than you. But in the real world, some smaller nations have been the greatest- Israel( 10m), UK, Canada (34 m), Singapore (4m) South Korea ( 52m) Our bullishness has seriously earned us negative emotions in Africa. We think its is because they envy us. But its not so. We are blinded to the fact that they resent our tendency to grab all, be unjust, and characteristically try to oppress others. This is a culture at home, we have exported it globally. This is why with all dues respect, majority of Nigerian churches overseas cannot attract the people of their target nation, most Nigerian restaurants abroad cannot attract non- Nigerian buyers, etc. 2- Nigerians are educated : Stats show that in America we have the highest (or second highest) number of academic degrees. Problem with this fact is that is celebrates less than one million Nigerians at the expense of millions. This year Nigeria has one of the highest number of children out of school globally. You need to visit public schools. Nigeria's premier University Nsukka, does not have toilets in some hostels. many Nigerian youths (0ver 70% of my class at graduation) have sorted their way through school with money or sex. This is the kind of Education we get at home. Despite all the so called education, Nigeria currently does not export any technology, Nigeria does not currently have any truly global company, Almost all the successful companies in the nation and championed or managed by foreigners- MTN, Multichoice, Shoprite, Nandos, KFC, Shell, Mobil, Dangote (indians, chinese and Europeans) Nestle, etc. All run by foreign minds because the quality of education is better than our quantity driven education. 3- Nigeria is one of the most developed countries in Africa: certainly untrue. Nigeria is one of the most under developed nations on earth despite its resources. A few pictures of hotels and glitz in Lagos and Abuja does not equal development. There is no place in Nigeria with 200 Km of unbroken tarred roads; power at its best is highly epileptic, no Nigerian city has portable water universally, there are less than 30 proper shopping malls in Nigeria, No truly internationl standard airport in the country, No national airline carrier, No proper parking systems in almost any city, no safe and decent metro rail and bus systems in almost any city, open gutters almost universally, no proper working waste disposal services in almost any city, almost no world class hospital, no foreigner can hire and drive a car in Nigeria, no credit system, no ID system, 95% of shops do not have a warranty system, an under developed insurance system, little or no mortgage system, .... etc etc etc. many things taken for granted in most developing and developed countries are not available in Nigeria, yet we boast of being one of the most developed. Many, Many African countries are MORE DEVELOPED than Nigeria- Botswana, mauritius, Ivory coast, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, kenya, Namibia, are all more developed.... Most of these countries have medicare, pipeborne water, near steady electricity, metro systems, railways, car hire services, etc. 4- Nigerians are proud: And herein lies the problem; All the challenges above can be answered by this issue:- because Pride has blinded us, pride makes Nigerians look at shanties and call them cities, it makes us celebrate the wrong things, it makes us focus on external look (fashion, movies, wedding celebrations etc) without quality. Nigerians love weddings- imagine the billions of potential investment monies thrown into these event. Monies that should have started businesses, solved problems, built hospitals, etc. The Bible said in the last days men would be BOASTERS; Nigerians personify boasting as a culture, in the midst of pain. lack, sickness, 25% of global maternal deaths etc. When we should be crying for state of emergency, we are busy trying to show the world how cool we are. We crave for Forbes lists, yet 25% of global maternal deaths happen in our country. There is no serious minded nation on earth that would smile at Forbes list appearances in the midst of such social crises. But the world can see.... where else are bombs going off weekly? In 2014, we had the highest number of terrorist attacks globally. We need to use the correct and God defined methods for change. It worked when Israel used it, it worked in Niniveh, it worked for USA after the civil war, it worked in the UK preceding the industrial revolution, it worked in the re-establishment of Israel, it can work in Nigeria- National humility, introspection, repentance and reorientation, focus on quality, gradual rebuilding. These cannot be replaced by "good news stories"sooner or later people get to know the truth and success stories of yesterday become failures. We have seen that already. Of the new 23 billionaires we celebrated a couple of years ago, most are today on the run, because they were never what they packaged themselves to be. There are many other examples. President Buhari is a man noted for his truthfulness and sincerity. He has summed it up in his October 1 address: "We have all the attributes to be a great nation, But at the moment NIGERIA is NOT a great nation. If we can HUMBLE ourselves and accept this, within twenty to forty years, we will see trully developed cities, shanties will disappear, we will see highways and interchanges, we will export technology, our children will mostly school at home, our public transport will work and most importantly, our culture and lifestyle will not be led by Nollywood, pop culture and the likes, but will be led by Kingdom marketplace minded players. God has hidden greatness from us because if we were as powerful as we dream, being bullies, we would trample everyone. If we had nuclear technology, we would aim to annex the world. God has kept true greatness from most of our leaders, in the marketplace and church. Our people temporarily fleet with success, but soon, it comes crashing. We cannot yet produce a Mandela (renowned for his humble ways). May God help our land.
Sir get over it already. since d nightmares you have painted is enough to keep every nigerian in a coma we sure do need more less depressing stories that d ones you choose to tell. Na wetin which country no get problem. what are you a mortician or undertaker by trade. Joor keep ur depresssing and suicidal thoughts to urself.
You are just an ignorant, naive and pessimistic fellow....So you would rather he post the evil happening in Nigeria, which is like 98% of the Nigerian News the world know. This Pastor is one of the few people saying something good about Nigeria , and here you are trying to stop him with your foolish judgement and even quoting the bible. Where in the Bible does it say that its only bad News that you should spread about a nation, and leave out all the blessings. Anyways i thank God he is a pastor and would not listen to a prophet of doom like you.
This one na dissertation you go write, every country has its prode side and not so proud side. We should celebrate what we have and stop picking ag things
Dear Mr or Mrs Anonymous. Truth is that after the first 6 or 7 lines into your epistle i tuned out because of some very few reasons. 1)Your points were well crafted but the motive behind your write-up i sense is slightly vindictive or marred with envy. 2)Whilst still maintaining that your points were well processed, i still believe that if an observer and curator of facts as yourself would slightly move your focus to a 'pro-Nigerian" state, you could be writing solution oriented national scripts and who knows, maybe making money from it. 3)It would not do us any good as a nation peddling "branded" stories about ourselves but you will agree with me that some of those countries you mentioned have mastered the art of celebrating themselves on Cable News Network, BBC, RT News, SM platforms etc which i'm sure tickles you whenever you see those ads pop up.. Could it be counted unto them as pride as well or do they get a pass because they have functional governance and a population made up of 99.999% honest/humble/God-fearing citizens? For the benefit of those who might not know, all the countries you mentioned have imminent poverty crisis to solve and are smaller in population than your estranged Nigeria. So Mr or Mrs, you have bought a lie. Visit their ghettos and not, joburg, Nairobi,Accra, Rabat or Tunis to see that all the issues you claimed we havent solved are still very much in existence in these places. Lastly, like i adviced, join people like the man who wrote this excerpt and change the current status quo where we are judged by our nationality and all stereotyped as scammers. Don't come in here spelling doom and gloom as i believe any forward thinking Nigerian (which u might be) needs to find ways in their own marketplace sectors to raise this country to the next level. The writer foumd his own way to add value, FIND YOURS.(...My suggestion still stands. Collaborate with him and create a problem solving manuel for the country on a state level. You with your facts , him with his passion. I could help u push it). if theres anyone who isnt Nigerian reading this, please understand that everything on this excerpt stands true and though like every other nation we still have our struggles, we will manage it whilst raising a new generation of leaders who know how to keep the main things the main thing and together erect cities whose builder and maker are God-directed people.
I was trying to enjoy this article until I got to number 8. That was a shocker for me! Every reference to the word Pride in scripture is negative. When pride becomes a thing to celebrate then in my opinion we are in a serious spiritual and moral crises.
I guess you are over flogging a point here pastor. I mean, aren't you proud to be a Christians? Should that stance be termed sinful? Think again.
I love this beautiful thought of yours, with all respect sir, I think we should rather support our gospel songs than the worldy songs. Thanks sir
Great Piece , I was excited by first telling people that Africa is not a Country... It is what I have heard Persons say over and over again. Friend reading this do make up your mind to Make A Difference for God. Whether An African or Not.
The statement below is why President Buhari (like Mandela) is different from most Nigerians including even those that are in the Church. He is a man who is truthful. This is a sign of humility. He is not into ego stroking to make things look good. It is amazing the amount of flak he has received in the past day or two for being truthful- Ben Bruce, Babatope, Balarabe Musa, PDP, have all scolded Mr Buhari for being a man of truth. But according to Buhari below, he will not be moved. He will stay the course, and tell Nigerians the truth until we become a people who believe in truthfulness and modesty. This is the way God will lift us. Buhari's statement: “President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity, incorruptibility and plain-speaking which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership [to] that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration,” said the presidential statement, titled “President Buhari Will Always Tell Nigerians The Truth.” Mr. Adesina added: “The President will not, in the guise of ‘marketing’ the country, refrain from telling Nigerians and the world, the emerging truths about the abject state in which years of plundering by a PDP leadership has left the Nigerian treasury and economy. “President Buhari will not in the name of ‘marketing’ or ‘attracting’ investors, follow in the footsteps of the ousted PDP Administration and its discredited officials who shamelessly lied to Nigerians and the world about the buoyancy and vibrancy of an economy they had bled dry for personal gain, when it was very obvious to the discerning, that the Nigerian economy was headed for serious trouble.”
Great talk, insightful speeches ,so powerful enough to transform lives and spur nations into greater heights.
