WOW, WHAT A HUMBLING REJOINDER TO MY ARTICLE ON THE CORRUPTION IN OUR CHURCHES:

You are so right Sir. Thank you and God bless you for always speaking truth. I live in Nigeria and I read your article carefully. Nowhere in your email did you generalize or even allude that all Nigerian Pastors were corrupt or all Christians were perverse. However, I must state that our society is a reflection of the state of the Church in Nigeria and we cannot escape liability for the corrupt state of our nation. The same is true of Ukraine but at least the Government is now taking steps to bring change to the Nation. We need to be completely transformed by the renewing of our mind as our thinking is so corrupt so that what comes out of our mouths and in our actions is also corruption.

Irrespective of what is taught in our churches by the various men and women of God, it is either that what is taught is wrong or we the congregation are corrupt because we are not practicing what is being preached. I lived outside Nigeria for many years and upon my return over 5 years ago I embarked on the journey of finding a suitable church. It was quite an experience!!! On the whole (generally) what I experienced was corruption and manipulation at its worst and myopia and pride at its best. I found many believers more concerned about position and title in the Church (which they ultimately abuse) than evangelism and caring for the poor and needy (unless this of course means access to funds which can then be converted to other purposes). Many churches I visited were no more than “social clubs” with announcements being more about “aso ebi” or “uniform” for women’s day or Pastor’s new car for his birthday celebrations than anything of spiritual value.

Yet, just down the road were ghetto’s filled with many people that could have benefitted from a cooked meal that day, or training to get a new job, or clothes for their children. Even the “poor” Christians were corrupt as they had learned to lie about their needs to get help from the Church or the congregation. Everyone was suspicious of each other because they all knew what was in their own hearts.

You only have to drive past our churches on a Sunday after Church and witness the indiscipline, pride and lack of self-control that pertains. Christians with stickers on their cars will leave their lanes and drive against incoming traffic – that is corruption. A perversion of our traffic laws. The men and women who stole billions of dollars from the nations coffers during the last administration were mainly Christians and Born again Christians at that! So were the many that won contracts without following due process or even meeting the criteria for the bid. And the many that won contracts that they did not perform. So what does that say about our Christianity?

So do we stop believing in Miracles? Absolutely not! But God does not work miracles through unrighteousness acts or principles. Therefore a person who receives a “Miracle” because he/she lied, stole, misrepresented himself or herself in relation to qualifications, experience etc. to get a job or contract, manipulated etc. did NOT receive a miracle from God. The Bible clearly states that whatsoever a man sows that will he also reap. There are many proverbs in the Bible regarding laziness and Miracles do not come to lazy men or fraudulent men.

True change can only come when we repent. Acknowledge our corrupt ways and not make excuses (or shoot the messenger as so many have in their comments above) and turn from our wicked ways. I have personally taken ownership of the state of the nation and of the Church and taken steps to amend my ways – obeying all laws, including all traffic laws, not giving bribes to gain an advantage, waiting my turn in line even where I know the owner of the business/bank, not cutting corners, giving my employer my 150%, not “borrowing” pen, paper, toner etc. by doing my own private business at work, letting my yes be yes and my no be no, not turning in false expenses and not stealing the hundreds of millions I have access to. I have made Integrity one of my core values and daily introspect and ask myself if I have acted throughout the day with integrity. May God help us all to change so that we can have a Nigeria that we can all be proud of and a Church that the devil can be afraid of.

Ayotola.

Thanks Ayotola for sharing. Indeed, we still have a remnant in the body of Christ who have not bowed their knees to corruption. A handful of people like you can make a big difference in a nation. keep the light shining. shalom
