One’s true character is revealed when they are down on their principles and in a hard place. Fortunately, even when this 44-year-old formerly homeless man had only 9 baht (the equivalent of 25 cents USD) in his pockets, he felt compelled to do the right thing.

Metro relays that Waralop was wandering the city of Bangkok, Thailand, when he came across a designer Hermes wallet that had 20,000 baht ($579) and a number of credit cards in it.

He could have used the money to purchase some food and comfort for the evening, but instead, he walked to the local police station and turned it in. Reportedly, the owner of the wallet, 30-year-old Niity Pongkriangyos, hadn’t even noticed that it was missing.

Good-hearted Woralop (corr), 45, had just nine baht (0.20p) to his name when he spotted the Hermes wallet with 20,000baht (£440gbp) and credit cards on the street earlier this month. Despite having barely eaten, he trudged to the local police station and gave police the expensive brown leather wallet with all the money still inside. Owner Niity Pongkriangyos, 30, was so thrilled when cops tracked him down that he offered destitute Woralop, who has no surname, a job at his metalwork factory in Bangkok, Thailand.

When he learned that Waralop turned in his wallet, he quickly found the man and offered him a job in his Bangkok-based factory. In addition, Waralop was given an apartment to live in.

His new employer considered offering him a 2,000 baht reward, but instead decided that a new job that included packaged living accommodations would be better.

Mr. Pongkriangyos says:

“I was totally surprised when the police told me they had my wallet as I didn’t even know I’d lost it. My first reaction was ‘wow’, if it was me in that position with no money, I probably would have kept it. But he was homeless and had just a few coins in his pocket and still handed it in. That shows a good, honest person. Just the kind of staff we need.”

Nitty’s girlfriend, Tarika, told Thai media:

“Woralop is such a good example that being kind really does pay off. When you’re kind to another, another is kind to you.”

The kind man has been granted a fresh start for his honesty. And, he couldn’t be happier. He says:

“I’m so grateful to be given this chance to turn my life around. Having a clean bed to sleep in makes me so happy now. I want to thank Nitty and Tarika for the kindness they have both shown to me.”
