Abriella Bredell covered the 7.9-kilometer distance to fulfill a goal she had set in April 2017, which was primarily aimed at raising funds for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“My goal is to swim the Robben Island Channel this December in order to raise funds for my favourite charity, The Red Cross Children’s Hospital”, she had written in an April 2017 Facebook post.

She targets to raise R2 million (163,000 usd) for the hospital.

Bredell has been swimming since she was two years old, and has a rigorous twice a day training session to better her skill.

After waiting for weeks for the perfect weather, she took up the challenge in december, and reached Big Bay from Robben Island.

She expressed her love for swimming; a sport she says helps her keep fit.

“I love swimming because I am a very competitive person and enjoy swimming races against other people and improving my times. I like learning new things, keeping fit and taking care of my body. Swimming does all of the above for me,” she said.
