Most people living here on the continent are well acquainted with power cuts and the exorbitant cost of electricity. Four Nigerian teenagers have come up with a somewhat organic solution to this problem.
Perhaps big business and governments should look into the idea proposed by four teenage Nigerian girls as an alternative source of power.
14 year-olds, Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin and 15-year-old Bello Eniola exhibited their creation, a urine-fueled generator, at the annual Maker Faire Africa in Lagos, Nigeria just over a week ago.
Three of the inventors and their generator
This is how the generator works:
- Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
- The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
- The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
- This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
Hydrogen? We do hope the girls are able to handle the generator safely as hydrogen gas could turn this power source into an explosive device. Nevertheless, we hope to hear more good things about these young ladies and their invention.
