Makoko is located in Lagos, Nigeria and it’s an area prone to flooding. For many generations the inhabitants of Makoko traditionally built their houses on stilts. Unfortunately, the community is facing challenges from increasing sea level rise due to climate change. After a visit to Makoko, Kunle Adeyemi was inspired to build a sustainable community that floats on water using recycled materials such as plastic barrels and triangular structures made of wood and bamboo. In 2013, solar powered Makoko school was completed.
