A POWERFUL PRACTICE THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER

Regaining our lost years is a fight against time. As earlier explained, time is ticking and we need to capture it and invest maximum value into it.  The greater the amount of time we are able to capture; the more value we can invest.

In this article, we will discuss a powerful practice that will enable you to harness a large chunk of your time and invest maximum value into it so as to produce more results. It is called Solitude.

Solitude is defined as a state of being alone, usually because you want to be. It also means to be in seclusion or isolation. Solitude is a time of complete separation from everybody and everything else to be alone with you.

SOLITUDE

Solitude which is a time of separation to be alone is a tool that will enable us to maximize our time. Through solitude, we can harness more hours of the day and invest maximum and concentrated value into them. Solitude is like grabbing the bulls of time by the horns, taking an aggressive stance against the loss of our time and making the most of it.

The practice of solitude can be likened to the process of concentrating light rays through a laser into a single but powerful beam. Through solitude, we can concentrate time and convert it into more valuable goods. During solitude, the entire 24 hours of the day is yours and yours alone. No one and nothing is competing with you.

I practice solitude. For the last eighteen years of my life, I have practiced solitude every single month. I lock myself away from everything and everybody including my wife and children. Without any phone, TV or even food, I stay in solitude for about three to seven days to develop myself, organize my life, spend quality time with God or produce any product that I desire. Without any distraction, I am fully focused on whatever goal I want to achieve. Because I am extremely focused and concentrated on my goals, my speed triples and I produce more results than before.

Solitude helps us to overcome distractions. In life, a lot of things compete for our attention and these may include family, jobs, social events, relatives, emergencies etc. From the time we wake up till bedtime we are busy and sometimes the busyness does not translate to results that are connected to our life goals. We find ourselves caught between too many things seeking our time yet we are trying to recover our lost years. Solitude offers an escape from these pressing matters so as to concentrate on the important ones. It gives us an opportunity to concentrate and invest quality time into fulfilling our life’s purpose.

We play several roles in our lives and each role demands our attention. So with each clamoring for more attention, we become overwhelmed. These are competing deadlines, urgent and important or unimportant matters but solitude is a means to gain some quiet and put order into our lives. It affords us the opportunity to de-clutter our lives and prioritize and put everything in its proper position.

For instance, Andrew is a Husband, Father, Finance Manager at his work, Head of the men’s fellowship in his church and a doctoral student in the University. These roles demand his attention and without proper planning and prioritizing, he may neglect some and suffer the consequences. He may lose his marriage if his career gets more attention. Or he may lose his kids and suffer the pain of having delinquent children if he starves them of quality time.

Solitude is an opportunity for Andrew to withdraw from everything and everyone to re-assess his pursuits, re-define his goals and re-organize his life. It will help him to gain clarity and prioritize his activities. In addition, he could create a system whereby all areas of his life are well catered for and none is bereft of his attention.

Through Solitude, we can re-build our lives. Our lives are in constant need of improvement. Growth involves changing but most times we are too busy to incorporate the necessary changes that will enhance our performance.  Solitude can provide an excellent opportunity to reflect inwards and eliminate our negative habits, patterns and attitudes.

I re-created myself through solitude. I changed my negative habits and imbibed new ones through the process of solitude. I changed my old value systems that were an impediment to my growth and copied new ones. I changed my mind-set and attitudes through the process of solitude.

Jesus practiced solitude before taking major decisions. He spent an entire night alone in prayers and communication with God and when he returned, he chose the twelve apostles.

Take every opportunity to practice solitude. And during your solitude, ensure you are focused on the products you want to create. Avoid daydreaming during solitude and work with speed. Set goals for your times of solitude and pursue your goals with intensity.
