When it comes to achieving your goals, many say it’s never too late. However, the elite few come along at times to show you that it’s never too early.
One of those elite few is a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) named Tiera Guinn. Guinn, 22, is a MIT senior who is on pace to graduate this spring with an overwhelmingly great 5.0 GPA. She already has more earning power than the average American adult who is almost twice her age.
Not only is Guinn an extraordinary student, she’s already working as a Rocket Structural Design and Analysis Engineer for the Space Launch System, which Boeing is currently manufacturing for NASA. Guinn told a media source in an interview that she credits her mother with helping her hone her skills of intelligence at an early age.
As a little girl, Guinn put her brain to use in an unlikely place.
“When [my mom and I] would go to the grocery store, she would get me to clip coupons [and] put it in my coupon organizer,” Guinn said in her interview with WBRC News.
“By the time we got to the register, I’d have to calculate the exact total, including tax. And I did that since I was six years old,” she continued.
Guinn also said her favorite movie of all time is Hidden Figures starring Taraji P. Henson, singer Janelle Monae, and Octavia Spencer. These three black actresses portrayed the roles of some trailblazing women that helped paved the way for Guinn, who knew she wanted to work as an aerospace engineer when she’d watch planes fly in the sky as a girl.
“One day I saw a plane fly by and I just had this realization, ‘huh, I can design planes. I’m going to be an aerospace engineer,”’ Guinn told WBRC.
This phenomenal young lady also gave some words of advice to the younger generations of #BlackGirlMagic that are presently growing up after her.
“You have to look forward to your dream and you can’t let anybody get in the way of it,” Guinn said. “No matter how tough it may be, no matter how many tears you might cry, you have to keep pushing. And you have to understand that nothing comes easy. Keeping your eyes on the prize, you can succeed,” she added.
