OBSESSION – THE MASTER KEY TO IMPACTING YOUR GENERATION (PART 2)

WHERE IS YOUR PASSION AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN USING YOUR OBSESSION TO DO?

Now that you have realized that passion and obsession are very important, can you think of anything in your life that you can connect with having a passion or probably having an obsession?

Can you think of any time that you have caught yourself actually behaving like an obsessed person? If you can think of cases and instances like this, what were you passionate about or obsessed with and when was the last time this happened?

I am sure that not too many people can say they have been really obsessed with something or highly passionate about a purpose within the last few months. It is very rare these days to come across truly obsessed people, and that is why we have only a few great people in our world.

All of us can be great if we can all be obsessed with our purpose in life.

Apostle Paul, one of the greatest apostles of the New Testament and of all times, was able to accomplish great feats in life and ministry as a result of a secret which can be deduced from Philippians 3:7-9:

“But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ-yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.”

Apostle Paul was a good example of someone who was very obsessed about his life purpose. When he discovered what God actually wanted him to do with his life, he gave all of himself to it. This accounted for his great exploits in ministry, which has immensely impacted and continues to bless the church.

I want to ask you again—where is your passion? What have you been using your obsession to do? If you have been utilizing your passion and obsession for worthy courses, then there is no doubt that you are already on your way to making a significant impact in life.

If not, get ready to grab hold of your passion and your obsessive drive as you join the league of great heroes who will stamp their footprints in the sand of history.

Please do not ever say you do not have a passion; it is an ever-enduring truth that everyone has the capability to become truly obsessed, and we can all choose to channel our obsession in the right direction.

Let me give you more depictions of how people have been demonstrating their passion and obsession. I like to use sports, which is one of the most lucrative career choices in the world. Why is this? It is simple, and the players involved exhibit so much passion and this, in turn, stirs up passion in the supporters.

The reason why these players get paid millions of dollars is that they are displaying so much passion and awakening the same in their viewers. What about their fans? Come rain, come sunshine, the arenas/stadiums will be packed with tens of thousands of people who will shout passionately for hours nonstop in support of their teams.

There are few places in the world where such unrestrained passion is on display as there is in sports; for example, in soccer, fans personalize the club, they fight (physical combat) for their clubs, and sometimes, even die in the process. Yet some of these people do not think they are passionate or obsessive in nature.

Manchester United’s home stadium has a capacity of over 75,000 and every game week, and the stadium is filled to capacity with supporters of the football club. However, not all fans can afford to come to the stadium and watch the match live. As a result, millions of people over the world abandon whatever they’re doing to show their support for the football club.

If that isn’t passion, what is it? Old men will jump and shout in celebration when their team scores and weep like babies when they lose. People have been killed while arguing that a player on their team is better than a player on the opposition’s; what is obsession if not this?

Last year’s UEFA Champions League final was watched by 380 million people [1], and the International Olympic Committee estimates that over 3.5 billion people (almost half of the entire world population) all over the world watched at least a minute of the Rio Olympic Games

Through the passion of people, bodies like FIFA, UEFA, the IOC and the NFL have reserves worth billions of dollars; they’re are making money off how passionate people are about sports. What of the most-watched football league in the world, the English Premier League?

For the 2015/2016 season, the Premier League had approximately 901 million total viewers around the world. [3] These and many more facts that we see all around us every day confirms that everyone is inbuilt with passion and the capability to become obsessive.

All you need is to discover how to channel your passion, grow it to become an obsession and use it to touch the lives of as many people as possible.

You hear some people say that their temperament makes it hard for them to be passionate about anything, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. These people say things like, “I’m phlegmatic, I’m generally calm and composed, my temperament doesn’t allow for displays of passion,” but they are wrong.

The Creator recognizes the importance of passion, and every man, woman, and child are equipped with the capability to be passionate. We all have the passion in us; you can use this passion to change the world; the passion in you was put there by the Creator to achieve greater things than your world has ever seen.

“Passion paves the way for action. Identify your passion; the intensity of passion is a great indicator of your conviction.”—Anil Sinha

People demonstrate their passion and obsession all the time, but they don’t realize it. An example of how passion and obsession can take over a person such that he begins to do seemingly irrational things, actions that seem unimaginable to people that they can dream of it.

Anil Sinha, former director of the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation, hits the nail on the head in the quote above –

People’s passion is what paves the way for their actions; the intensity of people’s passion has a lot to tell about their conviction.

An example is the story of the man that trekked from Lagos to Abuja to congratulate the then newly democratically-elected Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari. This man trekked for 20 days (almost a full month!) just to commemorate Buhari’s victory. [4]

For some perspective, Lagos to Abuja is over 700km, and the journey takes about 9-10 hours in a vehicle, yet this man walked the entire way. This is what passion can cause, an example of how obsession can fuel a man to do seemingly impossible things.

It cannot be overemphasized that obsession is your only secret to making the impossible become possible in this world. Yet only a few people are using this virtue of obsession to impact lives, create dramatic changes and transform nations. You have yours to use; make sure you accomplish great things with it.

Apart from sports, another financially lucrative venture that generates a lot of passion and obsession is entertainment. People get so passionate about music and they, in turn, idolize the musicians. When star artistes are in town, there is always an overflow of passion/emotion. The passion is so great to the extent that money becomes of little consequence to them; an artiste could quote exorbitant amounts for his show, and people will empty their accounts just to be present.

Not long ago, there was a video of some women that fainted almost in unison when they saw their favourite musician live; their brains were so exhilarated and excited that their bodies couldn’t handle such extreme display of emotion. There are also cases of people that trample on each other, often causing a stampede just in a bid to have a closer view of their favourite artists.

These demonstrations of raw passion and unabashed obsession are all around us. We all have passion and obsession; we only need to unleash it positively to live an impactful life.
