WHEN YOU ARE A MUSTARD SEED – YOU WIN!!

“Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.” Matt.13:31-32

The idea that Jesus Christ is trying to communicate through this passage to us His admirers, and all that wish to sit at His feet and learn, is that God desires to use every believer to spread his kingdom everywhere in a grand manner. Note the word desire in my statement above.

Friends if you are a believer, you are not supposed to begin to convince God to use you. It is too late! He already desires to use you. Moreover He desires to use you so much that He isn’t thinking of using you just any old how. He desires to use you in the best possible fashion. He desires to use you to the best of your capacity, to the best of your ability and to the best of your potential.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michael Angelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

God’s desire is to use you in a grand manner. What about if I am just a street sweeper? If you are a street sweeper, He wants you to sweep that street in a grand manner. But I am just a cook, if you are only a cook, He wants you to be the best cook possible in town. But I am just a gardener, if you are a gardener, He wants to use you in that calling in a grand manner. He wants you to be a gardener with some innovations. A gardener with some originality. A gardener with some peculiarity. A gardener with some discoveries. A gardener in a grandiose manner.

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” – Brian Littrell

Sometimes we think that only movie stars or five star preachers can be used in a grand manner. But no! No my friend!! Could you possibly be smaller than a mustard seed? Could you be smaller than a mustard seed? Could you imagine yourself being smaller than a mustard seed? It doesn’t get any smaller than a mustard seed. Yet, even for the minutest of seeds, God has a grandiose plan. For even the most insignificant creation, God has a big plan!

“If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?” Matt. 6:30

Ladies and gentlemen if God has such a beautiful, magnificent and grandiose plan for the most insignificant of seeds? What do you expect Him to think about you? Don’t tell me you are insignificant. Don’t tell me you are a nonentity. Don’t tell me of your triviality. Don’t tell me you are inconsequential. Don’t tell me you are irrelevant. Don’t tell me you are meager. Don’t tell me you are worthless. Don’t tell me you are minute. Don’t tell me you are none essential.

If God, despite all His other big creations, also thinks about things like birds, or lilies and if He has such a magnificent plan for a seed, tell me what He thinks about you. Please also remember that there are also much bigger seeds around. The Bible tells us that the mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds. Yet, even for the smallest, He has a plan and not just a plan; a beautiful plan. BRETHREN, WHEN YOU ARE A MUSTARD SEED – YOU WIN!

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 Jn. 4:4

Now let me ask you a question, even if you see yourself as the most insignificant, the smallest and the most nonessential, just like a mustard seed, would it be easier for you now to know that you are not left out? Could it be that His plans for your life are just as equally beautiful as those that He has for the mustard seed?

If you ask me though, my thought would be that, His plans for you are much greater, much more immense, much more enormous, much more extensive, much more stupendous, much more extravagant, much more tremendous, much vaster, much more pronounced, much more expansive, than for any seed whatsoever.

Dear brothers and sisters, take a good look at yourself and begin to evaluate yourself the way God sees you. Take a good look and find something good about yourself. Take a good look and admire yourself. Take a good look and rejoice about yourself. Take a good look and reassess yourself. Take a good look and value the grace and beauty of God upon you. Take a good look and rejoice that you are beautifully made. Take a good look and give God praise that you belong to a wonderful Creator.

“I am not a little bit of many things; but I am the sufficient representation of many things. I am not an incompletion of all these races; but I am a masterpiece of the prolific. I am an entirety, I am not a lack of anything; rather I am a whole of many things. God did not see it needful to make me generic. He thinks I am better than that.” ― C. JoyBell C.

After such a stormy beginning my friends, let us now move a little from excitement into analytical deliberations. A logical continuation to all I have said above is that, you cannot be made to be so wonderful, only to end up being useless or irrelevant. It wouldn’t be logical and it wouldn’t be fair. God’s challenge with us normally is not the fear that we could get out of hand, but rather with our low self-perception. One of God’s biggest challenges with man, is to get man to actually understand and see himself as God sees him.

We have a problem in not being able to believe or see ourselves in the stately and imperial status that God has placed us in. Most men, even those with the highest self-esteem, still can’t objectively see themselves as being nearly as glorious as God intends us to be. This is probably the simplest explanation as to why we can’t get ourselves to even begin to do all that God expects of us. We find it difficult to actually believe that “I” can do this or that. We often think that someone else might be able to do what God is trusting for us to do. But when it comes to us, we think we are not good enough.

Come to think of it my friends, how is it that you would not be good enough. Is that which God created, not good enough? Is it not consistent with what He has already done for us. Is it not consistent with how He treats even a thing as small as the mustard seed. The most consistent view of ourselves in line with Gods view should be that of honor, respect and glory. We should never have a reason to doubt whatever God asks us to do.

“Low self-esteem causes me to believe that I have so little worth that my response does not matter. With repentance, however, I understand that being worth so much to God is why my response is so important. Repentance is remedial work to mend our minds and hearts, which get bent by sin.” ― John Ortberg Jr.

Remember, He did not call us the mustard seed. He did not call us a bird of the air. He did not call us a lily of the valley. He called us the crown of creation. We are more glorious than all other creations. Even the big ones, we surpass them all. We are greater than the elephants. We are more magnificent than the birds of the air. We are more significant than the trees of the field. We are more salient than the beautiful flowers of the field. We are supreme to all other creations. When I say we, that is talking about you my friends. When I say we, that is referring to the least of us. When I say we, that is referring to the weakest and the most helpless in the eyes of men. If that is so, what are we left with? We are left with changing our view about ourselves. We are left with upgrading our mindset. We are left with believing what He says about us. We are left with agreeing with Him and His views in regard to us.

“What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him?  For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and you have crowned him with glory and honor.” Ps. 8:4-5

Now brothers and sisters, I think it should be clearer to you why God Almighty should desire to use you. It should be rather clear now, why He would choose you to be the one to carry out His plans on the earth. It is because He knows His premium on you, He know the price tag and the value He has placed upon you. So even if you see yourself as a mustard seed, even then you win! No one ever has the right to doubt the calling of God upon his or her life. No one ever has the right to think he could fail. It wouldn’t be fair to all the faith, trust and endowment that God has given to us.

No matter how small you are in your own eyes, you are nevertheless not smaller than the mustard seed. If the mustard seed has so much honor and dignity, you have even more. Please begin to see yourself differently. Begin to see yourself in accordance with His thoughts toward you.

Going back to the story of the mustard seed, oh what a glorious vision God has for it. God’s vision concerning the mustard seed is that it would not just be fruitful and multiply, God’s plan for this small and insignificant seed is that it would grow to have dominion upon all the earth. Could you try to compare God’s vision for the mustard seed with your vision for your own life? Won’t the mustard seed vision be much greater than what you are having for you own life? It should not be so. If God’s plan for the mustard seed is that grand, how much more will His vision for your life be much greater? He definitely wants you to be fruitful. He definitely wants you to multiply and of course He definitely desires that you will fill the earth with His glory as the waters cover the sea.

“We’re always taught that God wants us to always only say “I can’t do this without You God” , “Whatever your will is God, that’s my will too” but God says He is a father, and there is no good father who wants his children to have no will and to think that they can’t stand on their own two feet. So maybe what you should be saying is “I can do it” and “I have a strong will, I know what I want.” When you think God’s left you and wants you to be sitting like a duck, maybe He’s actually believing in you, teaching you how to fly.” ― C. JoyBell C.

As small as the mustard seed is, God never allows it to die without a generation. It grows and leaves a memorial on the earth behind it. Ladies and gentlemen, can you compare that to yourself, are you seeing a legacy after your life? Are you living in such a way to leave a generation behind? Is your daily life establishing a memorial on your behalf? Do you even see beyond your daily survival? Do you see beyond your earthly life? Do you see the generations that will follow you? Can you see a lineage of positive influences? Do you see centuries of righteous obedience? Can you trace your lineage to the tenth, twentieth, thirtieth generation of righteous seed, for the Lord?

There is no doubt that this is a legitimate desire, because even with the mustard seed, the tree that grows after it gets to live for decades. You too can definitely crown of creation after you, which will live for generations after you are long gone. Just like the mustard seed takes over the forest, can you believe God that your influence will not be local? Can you believe that it will spread like wild fire to the ends of the earth. WHEN YOU ARE A MUSTARD SEED, BRETHREN – YOU WIN!

“The problem isn’t that I think so highly of myself. It is just that you think so little of yourself. Live life BIG, BOLD and OUT LOUD!” ― Shannon L. Alder

Friends, our faith is of the essence here! Our faith in what God sees. Our ability to believe Him. Our ability to stay at the height of His expectations instead of descending into the valley of our human limitations. This will always be the major challenge of the believer. Either to take God at His word, and go ahead and act it out, or live in the comfort of mediocrity, where everything is clear, understandable and logical.

Apart from believing God for what He says concerning us, we will also need to believe in ourselves, that I am who He says I am. It doesn’t matter how I feel, it is irrelevant what my weaknesses are, I am who He says I am. Another area where we will need faith is in simply obeying and stepping out. Stepping out to do what He told us to do. Stepping out knowing that we cannot fail and we shall not fail. Faith to step out in preparation.

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” 1Jn 5:4

I prepare because I know I want to succeed. I prepare because I must succeed. It is that same faith to justify His trust in me, that does not allow me to be satisfied with simply succeeding. I want to succeed big time. For that, I work harder than the others. I strive, I fight, I endure, I persevere. All this takes faith. It is that faith that makes me know that I will definitely bring forth fruit. That faith gives me the conviction of fruitfulness. I know! Therefore, I work to multiply my gains. It is that faith that drives me to multiply my results.

“They are called, “Self-worth” and “Self-esteem” for a reason… we can’t let others decide what we are worth, that is so dangerous! Empower yourself!”― Jaeda DeWalt

It is that faith that does not allow me to be satisfied with where I am. It is that faith that makes me push myself even further to do my best, to stretch myself, to explore all my possibilities. It is because I believe, that I strive to cover the earth with the fruits of my calling. It is that faith that encourages me to want to subdue the whole earth for Him. It is that faith that makes me keep on believing, to keep on working, that one day the glory of the Lord will cover the earth, as the waters cover the sea.
