WHY ALL THE FUSS ABOUT PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?

There are two primary choices in life; to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” – Denis Waitley

Dear reader, have you ever been concerned about finding solutions to challenges bedevilling you, family or nation? This simple phrase ‘PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY’ provides the entire panacea. This is what this week’s article is all about, to show you how to use this most powerful tool to your advantage, solving problems, making positive waves and living your life to the full. To achieve the above, changing your mind-set from your old mentality is key and that is what this week’s article will do for you.

First let me explain to you what ‘Personal Responsibility’ means.

  1. Personal Responsibility is when you have a duty to deal with something or control a situation.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you are accountable or taking blame for something.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you cause something to happen.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you have a duty or task that you are required or expected to do.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you do something because it is morally right, legally required, etc.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you desire to be in charge or in control of an action or situation.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you acknowledge the fact that ‘I am personally responsible for what is happening in my life, in my surrounding and in my nation’.
  1. Personal Responsibility is when you are responsible for results and consequences of your decisions, actions and inactions in a given situation or circumstance.

Constitutionally, Nigeria operates three arms of government, the executive, legislative and judiciary. I have decided to add another arm, the fourth arm of government. Personal Responsibility is what I refer to as the fourth arm of government in this article. So the whole essence of this write up is for you to learn how you can explore the power and wealth of this fourth arm of government. You will use the power of Personal Responsibility to solve majority of problems confronting us as individuals or country wide.

Personal Responsibility provides you the easiest and simplest ways of solving simple or complex problems. The problems you see around you appearing as complex are mere imaginations. It becomes so simple if only one person like you can rise up to the occasion. Waiting for government or corporate entity to solve simple problems can even compound them, due to overriding interests of parties involved.

Let us look at this story of this young man, Dayo Olakulehin

Nigerian Dayo Olakulehin: From Personal Responsibility to Global Enterprise

In 2012, Dr. Dayo Olakulehin, was a young medical doctor doing his post-graduation houseman-ship at the Olikoye Ransome Kuti Children emergency ward, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, Lagos. The hospital where he served was inundated with a serious problem causing him sleepless nights. The problem was connected with lack of electronic lung ventilator specifically designed to assist unconscious patients breathe.

Dr. Dayo Olakulehi and his innovation called the D-Box.

It was a norm in the hospital and indeed many hospitals across the country leading to quantum loss of patients in thousands or a million world over.  Dayo could have resigned to fate and watch patients die like other doctors, who only complain about the problems and failure of the authority to supply adequate ventilator. It became a complex challenge with no future solution in view.

But Dayo had got a river of passion flowing through him, pushing him to embark on a scientific journey to invent a much cheaper and easy to operate ventilator.

The existing conventional ventilators averagely cost $30,000 and alternatively, the low-cost one which was still under development was to be sold for $3,000, when released to market. Dayo made up his mind to challenge the problem in order to save millions of lives through inventing most affordable ventilator for the world.

After much efforts and consultations with other Nigerian experts. Kunle Sorinyan, Dayo and Co made a major breakthrough by inventing a portable battery operated ventilator, called D-Box. Guess what, the D-Box was produced at an introductory price of $300, the cheapest and easiest to operate or maintain world-over.

In addition to solving the problems of cost and respiratory failure, Dr Dayo has changed the history of medicine all over the world. He had saved his colleagues the stress of indefinitely ventilating patients manually using a CPR bag.  On instances in which patients are ventilated for several days, health workers who should have been productively attending to other patients would have to take turns to keep those patients alive by manually compressing the CPR bag.

Solving the problems placed him above his colleagues including directors in the profession. He thereafter suddenly became MD/CEO of big company and a regular speaker at international events across the globe.

The problem presented itself to the entire industry as a complex challenge with no hope of solution in sight for decades until a young Nigerian decided to simplify it and find a solution to it.

Dear reader, get this clear, every problem you solve raises you above a contemporary level in the society and nation. Conversely, every problem you dodge leaves you below the bottom line or places you below status quo. No other way to get to the top than solving problems confronting humanity.

To be continued Tomorrow, don’t miss it.
