VOTE OF THANKS GEN. OLUSEGUN OBASANJO.

Hello everyone!!! Good day. Still on the Nigerian elections, I’m sure you’ve seen some of the videos I have done, congratulating my fellow Nigerians on the successful elections we had in Nigeria. This is historic to us as a people. Some people from other countries included might not know why I’m so passionate and why I keep talking day in day out about the Nigerian presidential elections.

Nigeria is the 7th most populous nation in the world, Nigeria matters! If things are done right there, it would affect the world, but if there is crisis or any form of catastrophe, it would have a spillover effect on the whole world.

The fact that Nigeria was able to conduct a successful election without fracas, is a great blessing to the world at large. That means there would be no Nigerian immigrants and all kinds of trouble makers going to other countries. They would stay at home when their country is run better.

Still on the vote of thanks to worthy Nigerians, today I wish to appreciate a Nigerian that deserves to be thanked by us all. That person is former president of the federal republic of Nigeria Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo.

Many Nigerians don’t realize this, but as a follower of events in our country, I’m aware that if not for the fatherly and godly position of the former President, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, there is no assurance that this election would have gone the way it went.

The fact that President Olusegun Obasanjo is hugely misunderstood in our nation isn’t an over statement. Most people don’t understand him. I know many watching and reading this will properly come against me and begin to attack me for acknowledging President Obasanjo.

That is to tell you, to what extent the negative perception about this man is. People are so negative about him. He is so misunderstood that even saying anything positive about him brings attack against you. Attacks come against anyone that tries to acknowledge him. Notwithstanding, I am not the type that will shy away from controversy. I know that as far as I speak the truth that I believe in, I don’t have anything to worry about.

I don’t know about the dark side of president Obasanjo if he has some just like most of us. However, from my observations, I as a Nigerian citizen definitely owe President Obasanjo my appreciation. I owe him great gratitude for the position of leadership he demonstrated. By coming out to make known his stand regarding the present government in Nigeria.

In my opinion President Obasanjo has proved himself to be a worthy statesman in the affairs of Nigeria and the world. Many would keep on talking about his third term agenda, but that is over now. Let’s forget about what happened. At least he heard the voice and the cry of Nigerians, when Nigerians decided to resist his bid for a return to power for the third term. We could say he didn’t force himself on us since Nigerians didn’t want it. So at the very least he listened. It is similar to what we are praising President Jonathan for right now.

I personally acknowledged President Jonathan. I praised him for conceding defeat. But really in most developed parts of the world and in any civilized society, that’s not supposed to be a feat at all. It is supposed to be a normal thing that when you are defeated you concede.

Nigerians would admit that President Obasanjo was a major factor in Goodluck Jonathan becoming the president. But the man is so faithful and so committed to the truth that despite the fact that there would be some stones throne at his address, he would not compromise his position of truth. So, when he needed to correct the incumbent President he made his position known and publicly too.

President Obasanjo saw things going wrong and he voiced out his position. He condemned the things he thought were wrong. He wrote an Open letter, he said he did not write the open letter until he had personally met with the president on several occasions to warn him about his concerns. I think President Obasanjo laid a wonderful example to us Nigerians, especially to the young generation on how to rightly love your country.

He showed love to President Jonathan when he attended his daughter’s wedding. This happened shortly after he wrote his open letter to voice his concerns about President Jonathan’s government. This he did to prove that you can love an individual, but disagree with his policies. That’s a matured position that is not common in our society. President Obasanjo has exemplified a civilized culture to us all.

When President Obasanjo leaves this world he could be proud of one thing that he left Nigeria a united country. He leaves Nigeria a more matured society. His efforts were also geared towards making sure that some negative things that were being planned in President Jonathan’s camp and the PDP, were exposed to us all. For example he spoke about the possibility of the military taking over and that was how that plan was foiled, if there was ever one.

He spoke about the plan to impose an interim government on Nigeria, which was also foiled because he exposed it much earlier, if that too ever took place. He spoke about some militants having kill squads that too was defeated thanks to the fact that he exposed these things. He also spoke about the money that disappeared from the nation’s coffers. He raised alarm about the reduction in the foreign reserves. He truly is as a conscience to the nation.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, I am Pastor Sunday Adelaja here in Ukraine. I want to say that there are people out there who are Nigerians that acknowledge you as the best living ruler of our country so far. I think you’ll go down in history as the best leader Nigeria has ever produced. As a military leader, you were the only one that did not prolong your military reign, even though people before you did that. You handed over power just when you promised to hand over.

Sir I believe you showed us an example of a detribalized Nigeria. At a time the Yorubas were expecting you to hand power over to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, you did what was right by handing over power to the winner of the election Alhaji Shehu Shagari.

I also remember that when you handed over power, the economy of Nigeria was very robust, when the power was handed over to the civilian government. But when you came back as a civilian president, Nigeria was at the lowest possible state economically, politically, socially. But again God used you. God hand-picked you as the “messiah” of our nation.

I believe the upgrading that we have as being the largest economy in Africa is not as a result of what President Jonathan did. I believe it was still the outcome of what you did with your government. With your government, the economy was growing at close to 10 percent a year. You delivered us as a nation from the debt burden. For that alone you deserve a monument on your behalf in our national history.

You deserve a huge appreciation for the reputation of Nigeria that was restored worldwide. Billionaires were raised. Before President Obasanjo came into power, there was not a single billionaire (USD) in the country.

I was in your office when you spoke about your plan to raise up 10 billionaires so that they could build multinational companies to compete with international corporations. Today thanks to your effort, Dangote Group has become one of those multinational corporations to emerge from Nigeria.

You have left a very big shoe to be filled, especially with your forthrightness, truthfulness and your position on truth. Kudos to you. I doff my hat for you and I say Baba you will ever be remembered.

I hope President Buhari allows your book to be published in Nigeria. I think every Nigerian home needs to have a copy of your book. We all need to acknowledge you as a national hero, not in death, but while you are alive.

God Bless you Sir!!!

Thank you pastor Sunday for helping us understand the contributions of president Obasanjo. I also was pleased to hear him openly rebuke the excesses of Jonathan's government. That is the Mark of a man who cares about country over party or politics.
Thank you Pastor Sunday for this piece about Gen Olusegun Obasanjo, I share the same sentiments about the man. I had expressed most of the facts that you enumerated several times in gatherings and other forums. But most people jsut liked to project and judge Obasanjo by the few mistakes he made. You are quite right about the economical gains and prosperity of Nigeria during the two periods he ruled the nation. The records are there, and they are much larger than his unfortunate third term agenda and other mistakes. Bless you sir!
